Robber Fly Clutching Prey

A robber fly (family Asilidae) clings to a vertical piece of lichen-covered wood while holding a smaller insect in its front legs. The fly's mottled gray and brown body and large compound eye are shown in even light against a soft green, out-of-focus background; the subject sits on the right third of the frame. You can see short bristles on the legs and the prey's folded wings at macro scale.
