British Soldiers Lichen on Bark

British soldiers lichen (Cladonia) grows on a piece of bark in the frame. The pale gray-green branched thallus is tipped with vivid red apothecia, photographed in soft side light with a shallow depth of field that blurs the background. A small cup-shaped lobe near the lower left reveals its inner surface, and several apothecia appear as tiny clustered knobs.
