Hoverfly on Plantain Spike

A hoverfly (syrphid fly) clings to a tall plantain spike while several other hoverflies hover and feed around it. The insect's yellow-and-black abdomen stands out against the spike's pale, fuzzy bracts and a soft, out-of-focus background. A small hoverfly is frozen mid-flight at the upper left and the spike's fine hairs are clearly visible.
