Winged Lion Doorway, St Mark's

A winged lion relief sits above a tall carved wooden doorway at the entrance to St Mark's Basilica. The paneled brown door contrasts with pale marble columns and carved figures, lit from below by cool nighttime light that creates strong highlights on the bas-relief. The lion's paw rests on an open book and a kneeling figure is carved beside it, clearly visible in the arch above the door.
