Gondolier on Venice Gondola

A gondolier stands at the stern of a gondola in a narrow Venice canal. The photograph is black-and-white with high contrast: dark water, mid-tone brick walls and shuttered windows tightly frame the scene. The gondolier's striped shirt sleeves and quilted vest provide a clear pattern against the rough brick texture.
