Female Downy Woodpecker on Bark

A female downy woodpecker clings to the rough bark of a mature oak trunk, angled upward as it inspects fissures. The bird's black-and-white plumage contrasts with deeply furrowed dark gray bark and a bright, blurred sky; a few red autumn leaves appear at the edges. You can clearly see its short bill and the white wing spots as it grips a small pocket in the bark.
